As the sages say, there are 70 faces to the Torah: a myriad of ways to understand the stories, the experiences and the laws. We all interpret, feel and internalize Judaism and the Torah in personal ways. Scholars study the laws, kabbalist focus on spirituality, Cantors pray and Rabbis preach. Between and around and inside and outside is where my art is created.
Stories in the bible are brilliantly laid out, every word tells its own story and every story evokes within us feeling and knowledge and experiences that transcend time and space. These are my starting points. I tell stories with brushstrokes and express emotion with color. I dance between realism and abstraction as I attempt to translate biblical events through the realm of PARDES - Literal, Allegorical, Interpretive and Mystical.
I create paintings upon paintings of pivotal moments in the bible, each one telling the same story differently. I struggle to bring to life the complexity of the Bible as I translate it into visual image encompassing the emotions, symbolism, history along with the vitality that has enabled Judaism to withstand persecutions and assimilation.
